MANILA, Philippines — Kevin Quiambao believes the stunning loss to University of the East fueled La Salle Green Archers back to the top of the standings at the end of the first round in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.

Last season’s and Finals MVP said the players themselves initiated the adjustments after succumbing to fiesty UE midway through the first round.

La Salle scored a repeat over University of the Philippines,  68-56, as they renewed their Finals rivalry  in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The Green Archers improved to a 6-1 standing to become the top seed to end the first round and handed the Fighting Maroons their first loss of the season.

Kevin Quiambao delivered 20 points and 10 rebounds for La Salle.

“We’re just very happy with how things turned out,” assistant coach Gian Nazario, speaking on behalf of coach Topex Robinson, said after the heated blockbuster matchup where the coaching staff of both teams were caught in a verbal exchange in the third quarter.

tMANILA, Philippines—For Precious Momowei, Wello Lingolingo not only saved the UE Red Warriors as a whole with his buzzer-beating heroics but he also bailed out the Nigerian big man.

After UE’s 63-62 win over the Soaring Falcons in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament made possible by Lingolingo’s game winner at the horn, Momowei expressed his gratitude for the hero.

“He saved my ass out there,” said Momowei in jest.

University of the East’s Wello Lingolingo drained a hail mary from midrange to rescue the Red Warriors, 63-62, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Lingolingo rebounded a miss by Nico Mulingtapang with just a little over a second left and  sank the game-winner for the Warriors over the outstretched arms of Joshua Yerro to end the first round on a five-game winning streak.

“First of all, we thank God because our winning streak is really putting pressure on us, so I’m very thankful that they’re following the game plan. Their efforts are truly answered prayers,” coach Jack Santiago said.

MANILA, Philippines — Wello Lingolingo was in the right place and at the right time to save the day for University of the East in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday.

Struggling in the first three quarters, Lingolingo remained patient and was rewarded in the end after sinking a double clutch jumper at the buzzer to lift UE past Adamson, 63-62.

MANILA, Philippines — Adamson completed its best start in 12 years after dominating University of the East, 63-51, for solo third place in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Kim Limbago led Adamson’s collective effort with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and tallied three assists, two rebounds, and a steal as the Lady Falcons finished the first round with a 5-2 record only losing to defending champion University of Santo Tomas and runner-up National University.

The last time the Lady Falcons had this much success was back in Season 75 in 2012 when they finished third place after losing in a stepladder semifinals against La Salle.

UAAP: Baldwin says struggling Ateneo feeling the pressure

MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin admitted the pressure is palpable for the young Blue Eagles to redeem themselves in the second half of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.

A basketball program used to winning and contending for championships since the 2000s, the Blue Eagles now found themselves in unfamiliar territory sitting at the bottom of the standings at the end of the first round.

“There’s pressure. Whether you feel it in the locker room or in the practice court, it’s there,” said Baldwin after Ateneo’s 78-68 loss to National University on Saturday night.

For someone leading a squad that has a shot at owning the third-best mark in the league, Forthsky Padrigao thinks the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers are playing even better than their record in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.

“[Our record] can be [better],” Padrigao told a few journalists who tailed him as he walked out of the postgame presser on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Padrigao was coming off a 14-point, 11-assist performance, his best so far in the black-and-gold jersey, as he led the Tigers to an 83-72 beatdown of Far Eastern University (FEU).

MANILA, Philippines — National University coach Jeff Napa couldn’t help but shed tears after the Bulldogs ended a four-game skid in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday.

Napa admitted he was frustrated over the team’s struggles and turned emotional after they finally got to somehow repay the support of the 1,350 fans from the NU Mall of Asia campus with a much-needed win over Ateneo.

“As true blooded Nationalian talaga, we’re proud na despite na medyo struggling kami, nandiyan pa rin sila naniniwala,” said Jeff Napa, who led NU to back-to-back Final Four appearances the past two seasons including a bronze medal finish last year.
